Ingredients
Scale
Rice
- 2 cups Sushi Rice (short-grain rice can be used as an alternative)
- 2 cups Water (for cooking the rice)
- 3 tablespoons Rice Vinegar (for flavoring the rice)
- 1 tablespoon Sugar (balances the flavor)
- 1 teaspoon Salt (enhances the taste)
Spam and Seasoning
- 1 can (12 oz) Spam (can be swapped with tofu or oyster mushrooms)
- 3 tablespoons Soy Sauce (for flavor and caramelizing the Spam)
- 1 tablespoon Sugar (for the soy sauce mixture)
- a splash of Water (to mix with soy sauce)
Egg Omelet
- 3 large Eggs (for the omelet)
Assembly
- 3 sheets Roasted Nori (to wrap the musubi)
Instructions
- Cook the rice: Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Cook with 2 cups of water according to package instructions. While the rice is still warm, gently mix in rice vinegar, sugar, and salt to flavor the rice evenly.
- Prepare the Spam: Slice the Spam into thick slabs. Heat a medium skillet over medium-high heat and fry the Spam slices for about 4 minutes until browned and crispy on both sides.
- Caramelize the Spam: In a small bowl, mix soy sauce with a splash of water and sugar. Transfer the crispy Spam slices to this mixture and cook over low heat for about 4 minutes, allowing the Spam to absorb the flavors and become beautifully caramelized.
- Make the omelet: Whisk the eggs in a bowl. Heat a skillet over medium heat and pour in the eggs. Cook for about a minute until partially set, then carefully roll the omelet. Slice the rolled omelet into pieces sized to fit the musubi.
- Assemble the musubi: Lay out a sheet of roasted nori. Place a generous layer of the seasoned sushi rice on top, followed by a slice of the egg omelet and a piece of caramelized Spam. Wrap tightly using the nori sheet and seal the edges with a little water to secure the musubi shape.
Notes
- Rinsing the rice properly ensures a clean, sticky texture ideal for molding the musubi.
- You can substitute Spam with tofu or oyster mushrooms for a vegetarian option.
- Caramelizing the Spam in soy sauce adds a rich umami flavor and a delightful glaze.
- The nori wrapping can be slightly moistened to help it stick and stay sealed.
- For easier assembly, use a musubi mold if available, but hand shaping works well too.
- Serve musubi warm for best taste, but they can also be packed for on-the-go breakfasts or lunch.
