Description
Sopaipillas are a traditional Latin American fried dough treat, perfect as a snack or accompaniment to meals. Crispy on the outside and soft inside, these golden pillows can be enjoyed sweet with honey or powdered sugar, or savory with beans, cheese, or meats. Made from a simple dough of flour, baking powder, shortening, and water, sopaipillas are quick to prepare and fry up beautifully to puffed perfection.
Ingredients
Scale
Dough Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons shortening or butter
- 3/4 cup warm water
For Frying
- Vegetable oil (about 2 inches deep in pan)
Instructions
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- Cut in Fat: Add the shortening or butter, cutting it in with a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add Water and Form Dough: Gradually pour in the warm water while mixing until a soft dough forms. Avoid adding too much water at once to keep the dough from becoming sticky.
- Knead Dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 3 to 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Rest Dough: Cover the dough with a clean towel or plastic wrap and let it rest for 20 minutes to relax the gluten and make rolling easier.
- Roll and Cut: Roll the dough out to approximately 1/4-inch thickness. Using a knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into squares or triangles to your preferred size and shape.
- Heat Oil: Pour vegetable oil into a deep pan to a depth of about 2 inches. Heat the oil over medium-high heat to reach 350°F (175°C), using a thermometer for accuracy.
- Fry Dough Pieces: Carefully place dough pieces in the hot oil in batches, avoiding overcrowding. Fry until golden brown and puffed, about 2 minutes per side, turning once with tongs or a slotted spoon.
- Drain and Serve: Remove fried sopaipillas with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve warm with your choice of toppings, such as honey, powdered sugar, beans, cheese, or meats.
Notes
- Sopaipillas can be served sweet with honey or powdered sugar, or savory with beans, cheese, or meats for versatility.
- For a traditional sweet variation, add 1 tablespoon of sugar to the dough for a slightly sweet flavor.
- Ensure oil temperature stays consistent at 350°F to avoid greasy or undercooked dough.
- Use a deep pan or fryer to safely fry the sopaipillas without oil splatter.
