Main Ingredients
- 4 large eggs
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (for greasing)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a baking dish or individual custard cups with unsalted butter to prevent sticking.
- Mix Eggs and Sugar: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, granulated sugar, and salt until the mixture is well combined and slightly frothy, ensuring even sweetness throughout.
- Heat Milk: Gently warm the whole milk in a saucepan over low heat; do not let it boil to avoid curdling the eggs later.
- Combine Milk and Eggs: Slowly pour the warm milk into the egg mixture while continuously whisking to prevent curdling. Stir in the vanilla extract thoroughly.
- Prepare Water Bath and Pour Custard: Pour the custard mixture into the greased baking dish or divide it evenly among custard cups. Place them inside a larger baking pan, then carefully add hot water to the outer pan until it reaches halfway up the sides of the custard containers to create a water bath for even cooking.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 50 minutes, until the custard is set with a slight jiggle in the center when gently shaken.
- Cool and Chill: Remove the custard from the oven and let it sit in the water bath for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.
- Serve: Optionally sprinkle ground nutmeg on top before serving for an added warm spice note.
Notes
- Do not overheat the milk to avoid curdling the eggs during mixing.
- The water bath ensures gentle, even cooking and a smooth custard texture.
- This custard can be served warm or chilled according to preference.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
