Description

Egg Custard Delight is a smooth and creamy classic baked custard dessert made with simple ingredients like eggs, sugar, milk, and vanilla. It is gently baked in a water bath to create a luscious texture and can be enjoyed either warm or chilled, garnished with a touch of nutmeg for added flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (for greasing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a baking dish or individual custard cups with unsalted butter to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Eggs and Sugar: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, granulated sugar, and salt until the mixture is well combined and slightly frothy, ensuring even sweetness throughout.
  3. Heat Milk: Gently warm the whole milk in a saucepan over low heat; do not let it boil to avoid curdling the eggs later.
  4. Combine Milk and Eggs: Slowly pour the warm milk into the egg mixture while continuously whisking to prevent curdling. Stir in the vanilla extract thoroughly.
  5. Prepare Water Bath and Pour Custard: Pour the custard mixture into the greased baking dish or divide it evenly among custard cups. Place them inside a larger baking pan, then carefully add hot water to the outer pan until it reaches halfway up the sides of the custard containers to create a water bath for even cooking.
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 50 minutes, until the custard is set with a slight jiggle in the center when gently shaken.
  7. Cool and Chill: Remove the custard from the oven and let it sit in the water bath for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.
  8. Serve: Optionally sprinkle ground nutmeg on top before serving for an added warm spice note.

Notes

  • Do not overheat the milk to avoid curdling the eggs during mixing.
  • The water bath ensures gentle, even cooking and a smooth custard texture.
  • This custard can be served warm or chilled according to preference.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
