Ingredients
Scale
Chai Base
- 1 ½ cups Water (For boiling)
- 2 teaspoons Black Tea (Loose-leaf preferred)
- 1 stick Cinnamon (Whole stick)
- 4 pods Cardamom (Slightly crushed)
- 1 inch Fresh Ginger (Sliced)
- 3 whole Cloves
Cream and Sweetener
- 1 cup Coconut Milk (Use full-fat for a richer texture)
- 2 tablespoons Coconut Sugar (Optional, adjust to taste)
Garnish (Optional)
- 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
- 1 piece Star Anise
Instructions
- Boil Water and Simmer Spices: In a saucepan, bring 1 ½ cups of water to a boil. Once boiling, add the cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, sliced fresh ginger, and whole cloves. Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer gently for about 5 minutes to infuse the water with spice flavors.
- Steep Tea: Add the black tea leaves or tea bags to the simmering spiced water. Allow the tea to steep for 3 to 5 minutes depending on your preferred strength.
- Add Coconut Milk: Pour in the full-fat coconut milk and stir the mixture gently. Let it continue to simmer for an additional 2 to 3 minutes so the chai becomes creamy and well blended.
- Sweeten the Chai: Stir in coconut sugar to taste. Adjust the sweetness as desired by adding more or less sugar.
- Strain and Serve: Carefully strain the chai through a fine sieve into cups to remove all whole spices and tea leaves. Garnish with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon or a piece of star anise for an extra aromatic touch.
Notes
- Use full-fat coconut milk for a creamier and richer chai; light coconut milk can be used but will result in a thinner texture.
- Coconut sugar is optional; you can substitute with other sweeteners like maple syrup, honey, or regular sugar if preferred.
- Loose-leaf black tea is recommended for the best flavor, but tea bags work fine too.
- You can customize the spice level by adjusting the amount of ginger, cloves, and cardamom.
- Serve this chai hot for maximum coziness, ideal during cold weather or as a soothing afternoon treat.
