Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 6 cups sliced apples (about 6-7 medium apples)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
- Pinch of ground cloves
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
Topping
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold and cubed)
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the apple crisp.
- Prepare the Filling: Peel, core, and slice the apples into 1/4-inch thick slices. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Toss everything together until the apples are evenly coated.
- Transfer to Baking Dish: Pour the apple mixture into a 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.
- Make the Topping: In a medium bowl, combine the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, salt, and ground cinnamon. Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture forms coarse crumbs. Stir in chopped nuts if using.
- Assemble and Bake: Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apple mixture in the baking dish. Place in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling at the edges. If the topping starts to brown too quickly, loosely cover the dish with aluminum foil to prevent burning.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the apple crisp from the oven and let it cool for 15-20 minutes. Serve warm, optionally topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for extra indulgence.
Notes
- Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best texture and flavor.
- Adjust sugar to taste, depending on the sweetness of your apples.
- Cold butter is key for achieving a crumbly, crisp topping.
- Chopped nuts in the topping add extra crunch and flavor, but can be omitted for a nut-free version.
- If the topping browns too fast during baking, cover loosely with foil to prevent burning.
- Allow cooling before serving to help the filling set and make serving easier.
