Ingredients
Scale
Bread and Butter
- 2 slices Sourdough Bread (Ciabatta or multigrain can be used)
- 1 tbsp Butter or Olive Oil (Use vegan butter for a plant-based option)
Cheese and Fillings
- 4 oz Fresh Mozzarella (Burrata can be used for a richer flavor)
- 1 medium Ripe Tomato (Heirloom tomatoes are a sweeter alternative)
- 5 leaves Fresh Basil (Pesto can be used for an extra flavor kick)
- 2 slices Prosciutto (Adds a savory element)
- 1 clove Roasted Garlic (Spread on bread for added flavor)
- 4 oz Vegan Cheese (A great way to maintain creaminess in a vegan version)
Condiments
- 1 tbsp Balsamic Glaze (Balsamic vinegar can substitute)
Instructions
- Preheat skillet: Place your skillet over medium heat and allow it to preheat. This step ensures the bread cooks evenly and develops a perfect golden brown crust.
- Butter the bread: Generously butter one side of each slice of sourdough bread. The buttered sides will be on the outside to create a crispy, flavorful exterior when grilled.
- Assemble the sandwich: On the unbuttered side of one slice, spread roasted garlic for added flavor, then layer fresh mozzarella, sliced ripe tomatoes, fresh basil leaves, and prosciutto. Add vegan cheese if making a plant-based version. Drizzle with balsamic glaze for a sweet tangy finish. Top with the second slice, unbuttered side touching the fillings.
- Grill the sandwich: Place the sandwich on the preheated skillet, buttered side down. Grill for about 3 minutes until the bottom is golden brown. Carefully flip and grill the other side for another 3 minutes until golden brown and the cheese has melted.
- Serve: Remove from the skillet, allow to cool slightly, slice in half, and enjoy your fresh yet comforting Caprese Grilled Cheese.
Notes
- Use ciabatta or multigrain bread for variations in texture and flavor.
- Burrata cheese adds a creamier, richer taste compared to mozzarella.
- Heirloom tomatoes provide a sweeter flavor profile.
- For a vegan version, substitute mozzarella and prosciutto with vegan cheese and omit meat.
- Adding pesto instead of fresh basil gives an extra burst of herbaceous flavor.
- Balsamic vinegar can be used in place of balsamic glaze if unavailable.
- Roasted garlic spread enhances the sandwich’s depth of flavor.
- Grill at medium heat to avoid burning bread before cheese melts.
