Ingredients
Scale
Basil Simple Syrup:
- 1 cup fresh basil leaves, packed
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
Lemonade:
- 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (from about 6-8 lemons)
- 4-5 cups cold water (for diluting)
- Ice cubes
- Lemon slices and basil sprigs, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Make the Simple Syrup: Combine sugar and 1 cup water in a medium saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar is completely dissolved, about 3 to 5 minutes.
- Infuse Basil Flavor: Add the packed basil leaves to the saucepan, gently pushing them down into the syrup. Reduce heat to low and simmer gently for 10 to 15 minutes to allow the basil to infuse its flavor. Do not let it boil.
- Steep Basil: Remove the pan from heat and let the basil steep in the syrup for at least 30 minutes or longer if a stronger flavor is desired.
- Strain Syrup: Strain the basil syrup through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean jar or container, discarding the basil leaves. Cool completely before using.
- Prepare Lemons: Choose ripe lemons that are heavy and have smooth skins. Roll them firmly on a countertop to release juice, then juice them using a citrus juicer, removing any seeds. Optionally, strain lemon juice through a sieve to remove pulp. Measure 1 cup fresh lemon juice.
- Combine Ingredients: In a large pitcher, mix the cooled basil syrup, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and 4 cups cold water. Stir well until combined.
- Taste and Adjust: Sample the lemonade and adjust sweetness or tartness by adding more syrup if too tart, or more lemon juice or water if too sweet.
- Adjust Strength: If the lemonade is too strong, add up to 1 additional cup of cold water or more to reach your preferred strength.
- Chill: Refrigerate the lemonade for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
- Serve: Serve the lemonade over ice and garnish with lemon slices and fresh basil sprigs if desired.
Notes
- Store leftover basil simple syrup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
- Adjust the lemon-to-water ratio based on your preferred level of tartness and sweetness.
- Use fresh basil for the best flavor; dried basil will not produce the same aromatic effect.
- For a sparkling version, substitute some or all of the cold water with sparkling water.
- This recipe can be easily doubled or halved to serve different numbers of people.
