Ingredients
Scale
Dough Ingredients
- 3 cups all purpose flour
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm milk
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
Filling
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (such as cheddar or mozzarella)
Egg Wash
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon milk
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Prepare Dough: In a large bowl, mix the all-purpose flour with salt. Add the yeast mixture, melted unsalted butter, and the large egg. Stir to form a soft dough.
- Knead Dough: Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8 to 10 minutes until it turns smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Shape Buns: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Flatten each portion slightly, place a spoonful of shredded cheese in the center, and carefully seal the edges to form a smooth ball.
- Second Rise: Place the cheese-filled buns seam side down on a lined baking sheet. Cover and let them rise for another 30 minutes until puffy.
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Apply Egg Wash: Beat together 1 egg and 1 tablespoon of milk. Brush this egg wash on the tops of the buns to help them brown beautifully during baking.
- Bake: Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 18 to 22 minutes until they are golden brown on top.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the buns from the oven and allow them to cool slightly before serving warm for the best cheesy experience.
Notes
- You can mix different cheeses, such as cheddar and mozzarella, for more complex flavors.
- For a softer crust, brush the buns with a little melted butter immediately after baking.
- These buns taste best warm but can be reheated easily for leftover enjoyment.
