Description

Delight in these homemade Apple Cinnamon Hand Pies featuring a flaky, buttery crust filled with a warm spiced apple mixture. Perfect for a comforting dessert or snack, these hand pies are easy to make and bake to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 4-6 tablespoons cold water

Filling Ingredients

  • 3 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Other Ingredients

  • 1 egg (beaten with 1 tablespoon water) for egg wash
  • Extra sugar for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apple filling: In a bowl, mix the diced Granny Smith apples with 1/4 cup sugar, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Stir well and let the mixture sit for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  2. Make the dough: In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cut in the cold, cubed unsalted butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add 4 to 6 tablespoons of cold water, stirring until the dough comes together. Form the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Assemble the hand pies: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. Use a round cutter (about 4-5 inches in diameter) to cut out circles. Place a spoonful of the apple filling in the center of each dough circle. Brush the edges with a little water, then fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape. Seal and crimp the edges using a fork to prevent filling from leaking.
  4. Apply egg wash and bake: Place the assembled hand pies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with the beaten egg wash for a golden finish. Sprinkle a little sugar on top for extra sweetness. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 20-25 minutes or until the hand pies are golden brown and the filling is bubbly.

Notes

  • Ensure the butter is very cold for a flaky crust.
  • Do not overfill the pies to prevent leaking during baking.
  • Allow the pies to cool slightly before eating to avoid burning your mouth with hot filling.
  • You can freeze assembled hand pies before baking; bake directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to bake time.
