Sandwich Ingredients
- 1 large Italian sub roll or ciabatta bread
- 4 slices salami
- 4 slices pepperoni
- 4 slices ham or capicola
- 4 slices provolone or mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 4 slices tomato
- 2 tbsp red onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp banana peppers (optional)
Condiments and Seasonings
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1 tbsp mayonnaise or Dijon mustard (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for toasting the sandwich.
- Slice the Bread: Slice the Italian sub roll or ciabatta bread horizontally in half to create a top and bottom piece for the sandwich.
- Layer the Meats and Cheese: On the bottom half of the bread, arrange the salami, pepperoni, ham or capicola, and provolone or mozzarella slices evenly.
- Add Fresh Vegetables: Top the meats and cheese with shredded lettuce, tomato slices, red onion slices, and banana peppers if using.
- Dress the Sandwich: Drizzle olive oil and red wine vinegar over the layered ingredients, then sprinkle the Italian seasoning evenly across the top.
- Spread the Condiments: Optionally, spread mayonnaise or Dijon mustard on the inside of the top half of the bread to add extra flavor.
- Assemble and Wrap: Place the sandwich halves together and wrap the entire sandwich tightly in aluminum foil to keep it warm and allow melting.
- Toast the Sandwich: Place the wrapped sandwich in the preheated oven and toast for 5-7 minutes until the bread is crispy and the cheese is melted.
- Serve: Carefully remove from the oven, unwrap the foil, slice the sandwich, and serve warm for the best taste and texture.
Notes
- You can customize the sandwich by swapping the meats or cheese according to your preference.
- Using fresh, crusty bread like ciabatta or Italian sub roll is key for good texture after toasting.
- If you prefer a spicier flavor, add more banana peppers or substitute with spicy peppers.
- The sandwich can be wrapped in foil and toasted using a toaster oven if you prefer a smaller appliance.
- Let the sandwich rest for a minute after toasting to allow the cheese to set slightly before slicing.
