Description

This Simple Toasted Italian Sandwich is a quick and delicious meal perfect for lunch or a light dinner. Featuring layers of savory Italian meats, melted cheese, fresh veggies, and a tangy dressing, all toasted to perfection in the oven for a warm, crispy finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Sandwich Ingredients

  • 1 large Italian sub roll or ciabatta bread
  • 4 slices salami
  • 4 slices pepperoni
  • 4 slices ham or capicola
  • 4 slices provolone or mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 4 slices tomato
  • 2 tbsp red onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp banana peppers (optional)

Condiments and Seasonings

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tbsp mayonnaise or Dijon mustard (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for toasting the sandwich.
  2. Slice the Bread: Slice the Italian sub roll or ciabatta bread horizontally in half to create a top and bottom piece for the sandwich.
  3. Layer the Meats and Cheese: On the bottom half of the bread, arrange the salami, pepperoni, ham or capicola, and provolone or mozzarella slices evenly.
  4. Add Fresh Vegetables: Top the meats and cheese with shredded lettuce, tomato slices, red onion slices, and banana peppers if using.
  5. Dress the Sandwich: Drizzle olive oil and red wine vinegar over the layered ingredients, then sprinkle the Italian seasoning evenly across the top.
  6. Spread the Condiments: Optionally, spread mayonnaise or Dijon mustard on the inside of the top half of the bread to add extra flavor.
  7. Assemble and Wrap: Place the sandwich halves together and wrap the entire sandwich tightly in aluminum foil to keep it warm and allow melting.
  8. Toast the Sandwich: Place the wrapped sandwich in the preheated oven and toast for 5-7 minutes until the bread is crispy and the cheese is melted.
  9. Serve: Carefully remove from the oven, unwrap the foil, slice the sandwich, and serve warm for the best taste and texture.

Notes

  • You can customize the sandwich by swapping the meats or cheese according to your preference.
  • Using fresh, crusty bread like ciabatta or Italian sub roll is key for good texture after toasting.
  • If you prefer a spicier flavor, add more banana peppers or substitute with spicy peppers.
  • The sandwich can be wrapped in foil and toasted using a toaster oven if you prefer a smaller appliance.
  • Let the sandwich rest for a minute after toasting to allow the cheese to set slightly before slicing.
