Description

Old Fashioned Egg Custard Pie is a classic Southern dessert featuring a smooth, creamy custard made from simple ingredients like milk, eggs, sugar, and vanilla, all baked in a buttery pie crust. This timeless treat is lightly sweet, delicately spiced with nutmeg, and perfect served chilled or at room temperature.

Ingredients

Scale

Pie Crust

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust

Custard Filling

  • 3 large eggs
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg, plus more for sprinkling on top

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it’s at the right temperature for baking the pie.
  2. Mix the custard: In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, milk, vanilla extract, salt, and nutmeg until the mixture is smooth and well combined, creating a creamy custard base.
  3. Prepare pie crust: Place the unbaked 9-inch pie crust into a pie pan and carefully crimp the edges to form a neat border.
  4. Fill the crust: Pour the custard mixture gently into the prepared pie crust, making sure not to spill.
  5. Add topping: Lightly sprinkle additional ground nutmeg over the top of the custard for a fragrant finish.
  6. Bake: Bake the pie for 45–50 minutes, until the custard is set but still slightly jiggly in the center. To test doneness, insert a knife near the center — it should come out clean.
  7. Cool and chill: Let the pie cool completely at room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow the custard to fully set before serving.

Notes

  • For a smoother texture, strain the custard mixture before pouring it into the pie crust.
  • You can substitute evaporated milk for whole milk for a richer flavor.
  • Serve the pie plain or topped with a dollop of whipped cream for extra indulgence.
