This timeless treat is lightly sweet, delicately spiced with nutmeg, and perfect served chilled or at room temperature.
Ingredients
Scale
Pie Crust
- 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
Custard Filling
- 3 large eggs
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg, plus more for sprinkling on top
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it’s at the right temperature for baking the pie.
- Mix the custard: In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, milk, vanilla extract, salt, and nutmeg until the mixture is smooth and well combined, creating a creamy custard base.
- Prepare pie crust: Place the unbaked 9-inch pie crust into a pie pan and carefully crimp the edges to form a neat border.
- Fill the crust: Pour the custard mixture gently into the prepared pie crust, making sure not to spill.
- Add topping: Lightly sprinkle additional ground nutmeg over the top of the custard for a fragrant finish.
- Bake: Bake the pie for 45–50 minutes, until the custard is set but still slightly jiggly in the center. To test doneness, insert a knife near the center — it should come out clean.
- Cool and chill: Let the pie cool completely at room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow the custard to fully set before serving.
Notes
- For a smoother texture, strain the custard mixture before pouring it into the pie crust.
- You can substitute evaporated milk for whole milk for a richer flavor.
- Serve the pie plain or topped with a dollop of whipped cream for extra indulgence.
