Description

Delight in these irresistible Churro Cruffins, a flaky and tender pastry treat combining the best of churros and croissants. Made with puff pastry, cinnamon sugar, and a buttery egg wash, these cruffins bake up golden and crispy, perfect for breakfast or an indulgent snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Puff Pastry and Flavorings

  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon whole milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a standard 12-cup muffin tin or line it with muffin papers to ensure easy removal of the cruffins after baking.
  2. Prepare Puff Pastry: Place the thawed puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Using a rolling pin, roll each sheet to slightly thin it to about 1/8 inch thickness for optimal flakiness.
  3. Mix Cinnamon Sugar: In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon thoroughly to create a flavorful cinnamon sugar mixture.
  4. Cut & Stack Pastry: Cut each pastry sheet into rectangles measuring approximately 4 by 6 inches. For extra flakiness, stack two rectangles together, creating 6 stacked sets in total.
  5. Brush with Butter & Add Flavor: Brush the top of each stack generously with melted butter. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar evenly over the buttered surface to infuse that classic churro taste.
  6. Form & Place in Muffin Tin: Roll each stack tightly into a spiral or log shape. Stand each rolled stack upright and place it into a prepared muffin cup within the tin.
  7. Egg Wash: Beat the egg and whole milk together until well combined. Brush this egg wash on top of each cruffin to achieve a shiny, golden finish once baked.
  8. Bake: Bake the cruffins for 20 to 25 minutes, or until they are puffed up and have developed a deep golden brown color on top.
  9. Coat with Extra Cinnamon Sugar (Optional): After allowing the cruffins to cool slightly, brush them lightly with more melted butter and roll in additional cinnamon sugar for an extra sweet and flavorful finishing touch.

Notes

  • Ensure puff pastry is fully thawed before rolling to prevent cracking.
  • Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter for clean rectangular cuts.
  • For a richer flavor, you can substitute whole milk with cream in the egg wash.
  • Cool cruffins on a rack to maintain a crispy bottom.
  • Extra cinnamon sugar coating is optional but recommended for a more authentic churro taste.
