Ingredients
Scale
Dip Ingredients
- 1 (10 oz) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
- 1 packet vegetable soup mix (Lipton or Knorr)
- 1 cup sour cream (light version optional)
- 1 cup mayonnaise (light version optional)
- ½ cup chopped onion (or substitute with chopped celery)
- 1 (8 oz) can water chestnuts, drained and chopped
Bread Bowl and Garnish
- 1 loaf unsliced firm rectangular bread (for coffin shape)
- Dippers: Blue corn tortilla chips, pretzels, crackers, or bread cubes
- Mini skeleton for decoration (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dip: In a mixing bowl, combine the thawed and well-drained chopped spinach with the vegetable soup mix, sour cream, mayonnaise, chopped onion (or celery), and chopped water chestnuts. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly incorporated. Then, refrigerate the mixture for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld and deepen.
- Make the Bread Coffin: Take the loaf of unsliced bread and carefully hollow out the bottom portion by cutting about 2 inches deep, ensuring to leave approximately a ¾ inch border around the edges. Scoop out the inner bread and save it for serving as dippers. Next, hollow out the inside of the bread “lid” to a depth of about ½ to ¾ inch, making it thinner but still sturdy.
- Optional Decoration: For added coffin realism, attach a breadstick to the front of the loaf using toothpicks to resemble a casket handle. This step is optional but adds a creative touch.
- Assemble the Dip: Spoon the chilled spinach dip generously into the hollowed-out bread coffin, filling the cavity completely and leveling the surface. If desired, place the mini skeleton decoration inside or on top of the dip for a spooky presentation.
- Serve: Arrange the bread coffin on a large platter and surround it with your choice of dippers such as blue corn tortilla chips, pretzels, crackers, or bread cubes. Encourage guests to dip and enjoy this festive Halloween appetizer.
Notes
- The dip tastes best after chilling for at least 2 hours to blend the flavors.
- Make sure to squeeze excess moisture from the thawed spinach to prevent a watery dip.
- You can substitute chopped celery for onions if desired.
- Save the scooped-out bread to serve as additional dippers.
- Use a firm, rectangular loaf for easier shaping of the coffin bread bowl.
- The mini skeleton decoration is optional but adds to the Halloween theme.
