Description

This comforting recipe features savory ground beef cooked with onions and garlic, smothered in a rich, homemade gravy, and served atop creamy mashed potatoes. Perfect for a hearty family dinner, this classic American dish combines simple ingredients for a satisfying meal that’s both flavorful and easy to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale

Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Beef and Gravy

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare Mashed Potatoes: Place the peeled and cubed potatoes in a large pot and cover them with cold salted water. Bring to a boil and cook for 15 to 20 minutes until the potatoes are fork tender. Drain well, return potatoes to the pot, add butter and warmed milk, then mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cover to keep warm.
  2. Cook Ground Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion for 7 to 8 minutes until the beef is browned and fully cooked. Drain excess grease as needed.
  3. Add Garlic and Flour: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir well to coat. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes to cook out the raw flour taste.
  4. Make Gravy: Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper. Simmer the mixture for 5 to 7 minutes until the gravy thickens. Stir in the tablespoon of butter for added richness.
  5. Serve: Spoon the creamy mashed potatoes onto plates and top generously with the beef and gravy mixture. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute part of the milk with heavy cream in the mashed potatoes.
  • Add sliced mushrooms or frozen peas to the beef mixture for extra vegetables and nutrients.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop or microwave.
