Ingredients
Scale
Pie Crust & Filling
- 1 (9 inch) pastry for a single crust pie
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 4 medium Red Delicious apples, peeled and chopped
Topping
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/3 cup old fashioned rolled oats
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup salted butter, softened
Finishing
- 1/4 cup caramel sauce
- Extra caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Pie Crust and Apples: Roll the pastry to fit a 9-inch deep dish pie plate, then fold under or flute the edges to create a decorative crust. In a medium bowl, combine the granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, and ground cinnamon. Add the peeled and diced apples to the bowl and toss until they are evenly coated with the mixture. Spread the apples evenly over the prepared pie crust in the dish.
- Make the Topping: In another bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, light brown sugar, rolled oats, ground cinnamon, and softened salted butter. Mix these ingredients together until they form a crumbly topping.
- Assemble the Crisp: Sprinkle the crumbly topping evenly over the apples in the pie crust, covering them completely to create a thick layer.
- Bake the Apple Crisp: Place the assembled apple crisp in a preheated oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown. For the last 10 minutes, place a piece of foil over the top to prevent the crust edges from burning.
- Finish and Serve: Remove the apple crisp from the oven and immediately drizzle the caramel sauce evenly over the top. Allow the dessert to stand for 15 minutes before slicing to let it set. Serve warm with extra caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream if desired.
Notes
- Use firm apples like Red Delicious or Granny Smith for best texture.
- Covering with foil during baking prevents too much browning on the crust edges.
- Letting the crisp rest before serving helps it set and makes slicing easier.
- Serve with vanilla ice cream for a classic pairing.
- Store any leftovers refrigerated and reheat gently before serving.
