Ingredients
Scale
Onions
- 2 large yellow onions
Breading
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt, plus extra for seasoning
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk)
- 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
- 1 cup regular breadcrumbs
Other
- Vegetable oil for frying (about 2 inches in a deep skillet)
- Optional: black pepper, paprika, or garlic powder for extra seasoning
Instructions
- Prepare Onions: Peel the onions and slice them into ¼-inch thick rings. Carefully separate each ring and set aside for breading.
- Prepare Breading Stations: In one bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and 1 tsp salt. In a second bowl, whisk together the egg and buttermilk until smooth. In a third bowl, mix the Panko and regular breadcrumbs together, adding optional seasonings like black pepper, paprika, or garlic powder if desired.
- Coat Onion Rings: Dip each onion ring first into the flour mixture, ensuring it’s well coated. Then dip it into the egg and buttermilk mixture, followed by pressing it into the breadcrumb mixture until fully coated. Place the coated rings on a plate and repeat with remaining rings.
- Heat Oil: In a deep skillet or heavy-bottomed pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to maintain consistent temperature.
- Fry Onion Rings: Fry a few onion rings at a time without overcrowding the pan. Cook for 2-3 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the rings are a crispy golden brown. Remove them with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil.
- Serve: Season the hot onion rings with additional salt if desired. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce for the best taste and crunch.
Notes
- Do not overcrowd the frying pan to ensure the onion rings crisp up properly.
- Maintain oil temperature around 350°F for optimal frying results.
- Use fresh onions for the best flavor and texture.
- Optional spices in the breadcrumb mixture can enhance flavor but are not necessary.
- Serve onion rings immediately after frying for the best crispness.
